What to get your wife or girlfriend, in nine questions

Answer what you actually know about her. You get three directions, why each one fits, and ideas for your budget. "Don't know" is a valid answer everywhere.

What is the occasion?

Gift ideas by direction

All fourteen directions the quiz picks from. If you already know her type, go straight to it.

Something to do together

Tickets, a class, a day with a plan. The gift is the evening, and you are in it.

Small budget
A picnic or a long walk somewhere neither of you has been, planned down to the snacks
Medium
Concert or theatre tickets, or a pottery or cooking class for two
Serious
Good seats for the artist she actually plays at home, or a weekend workshop for two

Before you buy: Agree the date or book something that can move. A beautiful plan she cannot attend is homework.

A trip, big or small

Getting away beats most objects. It works best when she does none of the planning.

Small budget
A day trip by train: you pick the town, lunch and the way back
Medium
One night somewhere close, with work and pets sorted before you tell her
Serious
A long weekend or a full week in a place she has mentioned, not the one you have been meaning to see

Before you buy: Check her calendar quietly. Days off, documents and who feeds the cat are your job.

Time off from everything

For someone who is always on duty, an empty afternoon is the luxury item.

Small budget
A free afternoon: you take the house, the kids and the phone, she takes the door
Medium
A massage or spa visit with the date already booked
Serious
A full day or a night away on her own, everything arranged

Before you buy: A voucher with no date is one more task. Book it and cover her duties that day.

One job off her list, for good

Not "I helped once". A job that stops being hers. Unromantic on paper, very romantic in week three.

Small budget
Take over one job she always does and never bring it up again
Medium
Pay for the deep clean or the repair that has been waiting a year
Serious
A few months of a cleaning or laundry service

Before you buy: Ask which job she would hand over. Choosing it for her can read as criticism.

A piece of jewellery

The classic for a reason, and a regular in the polls. Also the easiest to get wrong on style.

Small budget
Simple silver studs or a thin chain
Medium
A pendant in the style she already wears
Serious
A gold piece in her metal, her stone, her size

Before you buy: Look at what she wears daily: metal colour, pierced ears or not, ring size from a ring she owns.

Flowers, something sweet, a real note

Top of the Valentine polls. Boring only when it comes with no thought attached.

Small budget
A bunch of the flowers she likes, her favourite sweets, three handwritten lines
Medium
A proper bouquet and a good box of chocolates delivered to her door
Serious
A flower subscription for a few months, a note with each one

Before you buy: Find out which flowers. "Whatever was left at the petrol station" shows.

Something only you could give

Givers underrate sentimental gifts. It cannot be bought ready-made, which is the whole point.

Small budget
A letter, or a list of things you noticed about her this year
Medium
A photo book of your years, with captions
Serious
A portrait from a favourite photo, or an engraving with a date that matters

Before you buy: Start now, printing takes days. Use photos she likes herself in, not the ones you like.

Clothes or lingerie

Very personal, and a real risk if the size is off. It only works when she has shown you the style.

Small budget
A good scarf, soft socks, a tee in her colour
Medium
Pyjamas, a sweater, or lingerie in her exact size
Serious
The coat, dress or set she saved or tried on

Before you buy: Take the size from a tag and never round down. Keep the receipt. Find her size →

Beauty and scent

Safe when you stay inside what she already uses, a gamble when you do not.

Small budget
Hand cream or a candle from a range she already buys
Medium
A refill of her perfume or skincare
Serious
Her full-size perfume with the matching set, or a voucher to the shop she buys from

Before you buy: Photograph the bottle on her shelf. Her own scent is a sure thing, a new scent is a bet.

Gear for what she is into

Shows you noticed how she spends her time, and takes no romance points away.

Small budget
A consumable she keeps running out of
Medium
An upgrade of the tool she uses most
Serious
The serious version she will not buy herself, or a course in her field

Before you buy: Hobbyists have opinions. See what she owns, and ask someone from her circle.

Something for her corner of the home

A gift for how she likes to live, not for the household.

Small budget
A plant, a good mug, a throw in her colours
Medium
Better bedding, a lamp, a proper blanket
Serious
The armchair or the piece she has been planning for that room

Before you buy: The test: is it for her or for the flat? A vacuum cleaner is a purchase.

A useful piece of tech

Excellent if she asked, tone-deaf if she did not.

Small budget
A power bank or a tidy charging stand
Medium
Headphones or an e-reader
Serious
The phone, watch or tablet upgrade she keeps postponing

Before you buy: Check it works with what she already has. Set it up before you hand it over.

A voucher, done with style

Often dismissed by givers, yet in one experiment most recipients preferred a voucher for a favourite shop.

Small budget
A voucher for her favourite cafe and a note
Medium
A card for her favourite shop plus something small to unwrap
Serious
A shopping day: you carry the bags and the card

Before you buy: Her favourite place, not a generic one. An amount that buys something real there.

A dinner out

The top answer among American mothers in the Mother's Day poll. No wrapping, and nobody has to cook.

Small budget
You cook the full menu, you clean up, you do not mention it
Medium
The restaurant she has wanted to try, table booked
Serious
A tasting menu with the sitter and the ride home arranged

Before you buy: Holiday tables go early. Sort the sitter before you book.

What to get her by occasion

  • Birthday. Make it about her. Use something she likes doing alone, not something you can both use.
  • Anniversary. The date is about your story. A keepsake, a trip, or a repeat of your first date works better than an object.
  • Christmas or New Year. Book early. Jewellery, clothing and food lead in the winter polls, and winter is when people run out of ideas: decide by the first week of December.
  • Valentine's Day. Sweets, flowers and a card lead in the American poll; in France the favourite was a trip. Both can be true: small, or a real plan.
  • Mother's Day. Mothers ask for a meal out, flowers and time. If the kids are small, the best gift may be a day with no duties.
  • No reason. The cheapest gift with the best return. Flowers on a Tuesday or a job done without asking.
  • After a fight. Apologise first in words. Then take something off her plate. Jewellery now looks like a payment.

What not to give

  • Anything with a message about her body. Scales, diet plans, gym memberships she did not ask for.
  • A household purchase with a bow. If everyone in the house uses it, it was going to be bought anyway.
  • The gift you want. Your favourite band, your new game console, your idea of a good weekend.
  • Lingerie too early. In the first months it is a gift for you. Later, fine, if the size is right.
  • A voucher with no date. It is a task. Fix the date and handle everything around it.
  • The joke gift, alone. Funny as an extra, a disaster as the main event.

What women say they want: the polls

"Want most", "would be glad" and "pick several" measure different things, so these numbers cannot be added up. We found no reliable data by race or nationality, and the quiz does not use them.

What gift research says

How the quiz decides

  • Every answer adds points to some directions and takes them from others. The three highest win, without two near-copies.
  • What she said and what she enjoys now weigh the most. The occasion, your stage and the kids at home come next. Age barely counts.
  • If she named something, the quiz tells you to buy that. No algorithm beats a direct statement.
  • This is an informed guide, not a measured prediction. It has not been tested on real couples yet, so you will not see a match percentage.

Questions

What should I get my wife if she says she wants nothing?

Believe half of it. She probably does not want more objects. Take a job off her list, book time for her, or write something down. Those fit "nothing" better than a gadget does.

What do you get a girlfriend of a few months?

Something shared and light: tickets, a class, a good dinner, her favourite sweets. Keep lingerie, expensive jewellery and anything that assumes a future for later.

Is it better to ask or to surprise her?

In a UK poll about half of women preferred a surprise and about a third preferred to be asked. If you do not know, offer a choice of two.

Does the quiz save my answers?

No. The answers stay in your browser and disappear when you close the page. Analytics count only that the quiz was finished, plus the occasion and direction.

Why is there no question about nationality?

Because nothing reliable supports it. Polls give women in a country on one occasion, not "women of nationality X". Her own wishes predict far more.
